Here is why unconscious bias is more powerfully dangerous than we think.
From a young age, we are influenced by the world around us — parents, teachers, society — steady feedings and handouts shaping our unconscious biases without us even realising it. These biases operate below the surface, subtly guiding our decisions and actions. Over time, they become so ingrained that they surface in our conscious behaviour.
Bias is bias, whether conscious or unconscious. We need to recognise and challenge both to dismantle the many manifestations and their impact.
Take hiring, for example. A manager might consciously or unconsciously favour candidates who share their background, overlooking objectively qualified talent from diverse backgrounds. This not only perpetuates disadvantage and discrimination but also reduces workplace diversity.
Even those who believe in equality and fairness can be swayed by unconscious biases shaped by cultural and social experiences.
It’s time to check your bias — both conscious and unconscious. Racial discrimination is real and can show up as direct or indirect actions, harassment, bullying, or victimisation, etc.
Let’s commit to making our workplaces and communities more inclusive and equitable.
